Midday Musings

Midday Musings — by Will Boling

May 19, 2017

Welcome to the Midday Musings, a blog recapping and discussing topics from shows on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I’ll touch on some of the headlines we discuss on the air, as well as a behind the scenes look at off air discussions as well.

On Friday we had our weekly visits with Austin Price of Volquest and John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. John Glennon also joined us to talk about the Nashville Predators’ loss in game four against the Ducks.

Todd Pletcher — horse trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming — was our first guest at 12:45. Pletcher told us that while he is not superstitious, he will be wearing the same suit to Saturday’s Preakness Stakes that he did for the Derby.

Pletcher talked about his horse’s training regiment leading up to Saturday’s race, and what Always Dreaming has been up to since the Derby win. Always Dreaming will start out of post four at the Preakness, where he is at 5/6 odds of winning.

Right before the show started, 4-star safety Brendon Harris committed to Tennessee. Harris, a Chattanooga native, chose the Vols over Ohio State, Clemson and Auburn among others. Austin Price pointed out that Harris’ committment is yet another indication of how much momentum the UT football program has right now.

Harris was Tennessee’s top safety target in the 2018 class. With Harris’ committment, the Vols have locked up three of the top five players in the state of Tennessee. The in-state class of 2018 looks like a strong one, according to both Austin and Chad.

In our weekly NFL conversation with John McClain, we went around the league and highlighted the news and notes of the week.

LeGarrette Blount’s arrival in Philadelphia gives the Eagles a talented cast of running backs. McClain tells us that Blount will the feature back. In New England last season, Blount racked up the second most carries of any back in the NFL.

In quarterback news, Texans rookie Deshaun Watson is the talk of the town, however don’t expect him to be making any starts in the near future. McClain told us that Tom Savage, if he can stay healthy, appears to be the guy in Houston moving forward. Ryan Fitzpatrick signed a contract in Tampa Bay.

I’m convinced he will have played for every NFL franchise before he retires. He’s like the fifth year senior from your rival college team who won’t go away.

In other words, Ryan Fitzpatrick is to the NFL as J.J. Frazier is to college basketball.

Quote of the Day: “The minute you make fun of pro wrestling, David Reed has nothing to do with you anymore.” — Chad

Stat of the Day: For the second straight game, the Nashville Predators set a franchise record TV rating. Thursday’s game four received an 11.2 locally.

Until Monday,

Will
