Tennessee Titans 2024 Offseason Tracker

And, just like that the Tennessee Titans 2023 season comes to end to the tune of 6-11 on the season, securing the 7th overall selection in this year’s draft, and miss out on the playoffs for the second consecutive season. The Titans did go out with a bang, however, as they stifle divisional rival Jacksonville Jaguars 28-20 at Nissan Stadium. In what was a win-and-you’re in situation for the Jaguars, the Titans had other plans to keep them at home for the playoffs.

The win snapped a 3-game losing streak for the Titans improving their record to 6-11. The 2023 campaign saw some similarities to that of the previous two seasons. Injuries. Once again for the third consecutive season, the Tennessee Titans led the NFL in players fielded over the course of the season with 83. After setting the NFL record in 2021 with 91 players used, the Titans followed it up with 86 players in 2022, the second most in league history. Now, the Titans, in 2023, led the NFL with 83 players used and placed 18 players on injured-reserve, tied for the most in the league. Inconsistencies amongst player personnel, specifically the offensive line, plagued the Titans in their worst season since 2015.

On Tuesday, January 9th, just two days after the Titans win over the Jaguars, change hit the Tennessee Titans organization. Owner Amy Adams-Strunk and the Titans fired head coach Mike Vrabel just two years removed from him winning NFL Coach of the Year in 2021.

Going into the 2024 offseason, many questions surround this Titans organization and the team. Who will be the next head coach? Who will the Titans select with the 7th overall pick? How will the Titans improve their team through the draft and free agency?

All these questions and more will be answered as we keep track of all of the Tennessee Titans moves below in 104-5 The Zone’s Offseason Tracker! This page will be continuously updated throughout as the 2024 offseason pushes on.

Titans Move on from Mike Vrabel

Owner, Amy Adams-Strunk, and the Tennessee Titans announced Tuesday, January 9th the firing of head coach Mike Vrabel. In his six seasons in Nashville, Vrabel went 54-45 (.545%) leading the Titans to three consecutive playoff berths in 2019-2021, two AFC South titles (2020 & 2021), a trip to the AFC Championship (2019), and the number one seed in the AFC in 2021, the same year he won NFL Coach of the Year. In the postseason, Vrabel went 2-3.

Adams-Strunk citing why she decided on the firing of Vrabel, she said this in a statement released shortly after the announcement:

“Last year, we began a shift in our approach to football leadership and made several changes to our personnel to advance that plan. As I continued to assess the state of our team, I arrived at the conclusion that the team would also benefit from the fresh approach and perspective of a new coaching staff.”

Head Coach Candidates

General Manager Ran Carthon, in his second offseason, now has the task of heading up the search committee to find the next head football coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Amy Adams-Strunk, Ran Carthon, and the Tennessee Titans announced their interest in several head coaching candidates that they would like to interview in Dan Quinn, Antonio Pierce, Brian Callahan, Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Mike Kafka, Mike Macdonald, Bobby Slowik, Brian Johnson, and Thomas Brown.

In-person interviews cannot begin until after the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn: The former Atlanta Falcons head coach from 2015-2020 is back on the market for a head coaching job and is considered one of the top candidates in the NFL. Quinn led the Falcons to a trip to Super Bowl 51, but they lost in overtime to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 34-28 in 2017. Quinn has been with the Cowboys since 2021 and has led them to one of the top defenses in the NFL in consistent years. The Cowboys rank defensively 5th in total yards allowed (299.7 yards/game), 5th in passing yards allowed (187.4 yards/game), and 5th in points allowed (18.5 points/game). UPDATE: Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Wednesday, January 17th.

Las Vegas Raiders Interim HC Antonio Pierce: He entered the 2023 season as a linebackers coach for the Raiders, but ultimately was named interim head coach on October 31, 2023 after Josh McDaniels was fired mid-season. Pierce led the Raiders to a 5-4 record in the nine games he coached. This is Pierce’s first experience as a head coach in the NFL. UPDATE: Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Saturday, January 13th.

Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan: The Bengals offensive coordinator since 2019, Callahan has helped develop former number one overall pick in 2020 quarterback Joe Burrow. This season as OC, Callahan has helped the Bengals offense to finish 22nd in total yardage per game (318.9), 15th in passing yards (229.1), 31st in rushing yards (89.8) and 16th in points scored (21.5). Update: Brian Callahan had a virtual interview with the Titans on Friday, January 12th. (Callahan and the Titans are scheduling a second interview, this time in person, sometime next week.)

  • UPDATE: On Wednesday, January 24th the Tennessee Titans made official Brian the hiring of former Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan as their new head football coach.

Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson: The Lions offensive coordinator since 2022, Johnson has played a major part in crafting one of the league’s best offenses. The Lions in 2023 ranked 3rd in total yards with 394.8 yards/game, 2nd in passing yards with 258.9 yards/game, 5th in rushing yards with 135.9 yards/game, and 5th in points at 27.1 points/game. Johnson was the tight ends coach in 2020-21 before receiving a promotion midseason from Dan Campbell in 2021 to passing game coordinator and then received another promotion to OC before the start of the 2022 season. Johnson is one of the more sought after candidates this year.

Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn: The Lions defensive coordinator since 2021, Glenn has helped the Lions defense rank 19th in total yards allowed with 336.1 yards and 23rd in points allowed with 23.2 this season. The Titans, in comparison, ranked 18th in yards allowed with 335.1 yards and 16th in points allowed with 21.6. UPDATE: Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Friday, January 19th.

New York Giants OC Mike Kafka: The Giants offensive coordinator since 2022, Kafka is considered a rising star in the NFL ranks as the Giants surprised most in 2022 by making the playoffs. But, this season the Giants fielded one of the worst offenses in the NFL, finishing 30th in points scored (15.6 points/game), 29th in yards gained (280 yards/game), and 31st in passing yards (169.8 yards/game). In comparison, the Titans finished the year 27th in points scored (17.9 points/game), 28th in total yards (289 yards/game), and 29th in passing (180.4 yards/game). UPDATE: Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Friday, January 12th.

Baltimore Ravens DC Mike Macdonald: The Ravens defensive coordinator since 2022, Macdonald is expected to be one of the league’s hot names to become a potential head coach in this cycle after a successful 2023 season with the Ravens. Baltimore finished first after allowing just 280 points this season (16.5) and sixth total yards allowed with 301.4 yards per game. He rose from defensive assistant, to defensive backs coach, to linebackers coach between 2015 and 2018. He then went to Michigan to work for John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim, in 2021 as defensive coordinator before coming back to the Ravens as DC in 2022. Macdonald has helped the Ravens to be defensively ranked 6th in total yards allowed (301.4 yards/game), 6th in passing yards allowed (191.9 yards/game), and 1st in points allowed (16.5 points/game). UPDATE: Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald completed a virtual interview with the Titans Saturday, January 13th.

Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik: Slowik is a first year offensive coordinator in the NFL taking the OC job in Houston in 2023. After the Texans were one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2022, earning the 2nd overall pick in the 2023 draft, the Texans selected quarterback CJ Stroud. Slowik helped take Stroud and the Texans offense to new heights in 2023 ranking 12th in total yards (342.2 yards/game), 7th in passing yards (245.5 yards per game), and 14th in points (22.2 points per game). Slowik has slowly moved up the NFL ranks starting as a video assistant with the Washington Redskins in 2010, joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 as the defensive quality control coach, and moved his way up to offensive passing game coordinator for the 49ers in 2022 before joining DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans staff in 2023 as the offensive coordinator. Slowik figures to be one of the more prominent names in the coaching cycle. UPDATE: Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Thursday, January 18th.

Philadelphia Eagles OC Brian Johnson: Johnson is a former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in college before receiving his first opportunity in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. Once Shane Steichen was hired to be the Indianapolis Colts head coach before the 2023 season, Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator. The Eagles had a down year, but Johnson still helped the Eagles to offensive ranks of 8th in total yards (354.4 yards/game), 16th in passing (225.5 yards/game), 8th in rushing (128.8 yards/game), and 7th in points (25.5 points/game). UPDATE: Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Friday, January 19th.

Carolina Panthers OC Thomas Brown: Brown is a former running back in the NFL from 2008-2010. Now, he is a first year offensive coordinator in the NFL taking the OC job in Carolina in 2023. Brown got his coaching start in the college world as a strength and conditioning coach at Georgia in 2011. Since, he bounced around as a running backs coach until making a jump to the NFL on Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams staff as the running backs coach in 2020 and promoted to assistant head coach in 2021. Last season, Brown became the OC in Carolina, but Panthers head coach Frank Reich was the primary play caller on offense until he was fired. The Carolina Panthers finished the season 2-15 and never found their footing on offense ranking at the bottom of the league in most categories (total YPG, pass YPG, PPG). UPDATE: Panthers OC Thomas Brown completed a virtual interview with the Titans on Thursday, January 18th.

Former Stanford Cardinals HC David Shaw: Shaw did not coach in 2023 but was with the Stanford University Cardinals as their head coach for 12 seasons and became the winningest coach in the schools history going 96-54. Shaw was an assistant with Philadelphia, the Raiders and Baltimore in the NFL before going to Stanford as an assistant to then-head coach Jim Harbaugh in 2007 as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. David Shaw completed an in-person interview with the Titans on Sunday, January 21st.

UPDATE (1/24/24): The Tennessee Titans have hired Brian Callahan as the franchise’s 20th head coach (6th in the Titans era). Callahan joins the Titans after spending the previous five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals as their offensive coordinator. The 39-year-old has 14 years of NFL coaching experience getting his start in 2010 with the Denver Broncos as a coaching assistant.

“This is an exciting time for our franchise, and we’re thrilled to have Brian as our head coach. We went through a thorough candidate search and Brian stood out as the best person to lead our football team. I want to thank the other candidates who were part of this process and wish them well moving forward.”

“Brian has a track record of success and a range of experience that has prepared him for this opportunity. His football knowledge and his enthusiasm for the game really stand out, and beyond that, we think his ability to lead will make him the ideal fit for our franchise.”

“If you look at his history, Brian has been a part of a Super Bowl winning team (Denver, 2015) and another team that advanced to the Super Bowl (Cincinnati, 2021). He’s worked in a variety of dynamic offenses with top-flight quarterbacks. At each step of his career, he’s shown the flexibility and intelligence to make an impact.”

Tennessee Titans Coaching Additions

New head coach for the Tennessee Titans, Brian Callahan, has gotten to work quickly after being hired on January 24th. Callahan, along with general manager Ran Carthon, have fired much of the previous coaching staff under Mike Vrabel. Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, quarterbacks coach Charles London, offensive lines coach Jason Houghtaling, outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow, special teams coach Tom Quinn, linebackers coach Bobby King, assistant linebackers coach Zak Kuhr, and director of football administration John Streicher are among those let go by the team. Also, wide receivers coach Rob Moore (Carolina) , tight ends coach Tony Dews (Jets), assistant head coach and defensive line coach Terrell Williams (Lions), and passing game analyst Pat O’Hara will not be returning on the Titans staff.

Titans head coach Brian Callahan and general manager Ran Carthon are wiping the slate clean and entering a new era of Titans football with more coaching decisions on the way.

“We’re going to get the right people,” Callahan said during his introductory press conference. “We’re going to find great teachers. We’re going to find people of high character, find great communicators, and guys that coach with great energy and passion. And so that’s what we’re looking for. And we hope to find them. We’re going to leave no stone unturned to find those guys.”

– Titans Head Coach Brian Callahan in his introductory press conference on Jan. 24th

Defensive Coordinator: The first hire under incoming head coach Brian Callahan is the former Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach, Dennard Wilson. As the Titans new defensive coordinator, Wilson will be entering his 13th NFL season and a part of his 5th team as a coach. He got his start with the Chicago Bears as a Pro Scout from 2008-11 before heading to the sideline to be a NFL coach in St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams from 2012-14 as a defensive quality control coach before then getting a promotion in 2015-16 as a defensive backs coach. He, then, took the same job with the New York Jets from 2017-18. Then, in 2019-20 he added defensive passing game coordinator to his title with the Jets. From 2021-22, Wilson spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive passing game coordinator (2022) and defensive backs coach (2021-22). Last season, Wilson was a part of coaching the league’s best defense in the Baltimore Ravens as their defensive backs coach helping the Ravens to the No. 1 scoring defense, second in passing touchdowns allowed, and sixth in passing yards and total yards allowed. Wilson is expected to improve a Titans defense in which they ranked 16th in scoring defense, and 18th in both total yards and passing yards allowed. (Titans former defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is being hired by the New York Giants to be their defensive coordinator.)

Offensive Coordinator: The Titans interviewed Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Nick Holz and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis for the teams vacant offensive coordinator position. Holz is considered to be a top candidate for the position according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. *UPDATE* On Friday, February 2nd, the Tennessee Titans hired Nick Holz to be their new offensive coordinator. The former Jaguars passing game coordinator has eleven years of NFL coaching experience. Holz helped the Jaguars to ninth ranked in the NFL in passing (242.7 yards per game) and 13th in points scored (22.2 points per game). Holz’s ties to the Callahan family run deep. His first college coaching job came in 2007 when Nebraska coach Bill Callahan, Brian’s father, hired him as a video intern and offensive assistant. Holz also was the offensive and operations assistant with Stanford (2008-11). He also was an assistant quarterbacks coach, working with Andrew Luck.

Wide Receivers Coach: The Tennessee Titans are hiring Tyke Tolbert as the teams new wide receivers coach. Tolbert was with the Chicago Bears last season and helped Bears wide receiver DJ Moore to a career year with 96 catches, 1,364 yds & 8 TDs. Tolbert has been in the NFL since 2003 as a wide receivers coach with stops in Arizona (2003), Buffalo (2004-09), Carolina Panthers (2010), Denver (2011-17), New York Giants (2018-21), and Chicago (2022-23). He also coached alongside Brian Callahan in Denver with the Broncos. Tolbert has coached numerous great receivers including Larry Fitzgerald (ARI), Eric Moulds (BUF), Steve Smith (CAR), Demaryius Thomas (DEN), and Emmanuel Sanders (DEN).

Offensive Line Coach: The Tennessee Titans are hiring Bill Callahan, father of Titans head coach Brian Callahan, to the be the teams offensive line coach. Callahan was under contract with the Cleveland Browns for the 2024 season, whom he spent the last four seasons with helping build one of the league’s best offensive line groups. However, the two sides agreed to part ways, relieving him of his contract and allowing him to join the Titans and his sons staff. Callahan, according to many experts across the NFL, is said to be one of, if not the best, offensive line coach in the game. With Bill Callahan joining his sons staff, this will mark the first time in NFL history that a head coach hired his father.

Defensive Backs Coach: After the Titans found their new defensive coordinator in Dennard Wilson, the Titans hired Steven Jackson to be the next defensive backs coach. Jackson was a third-round pick of the Houston Oilers in the 1991 NFL draft and spent his entire nine-year career with the franchise. He played the last snaps of his career in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Titans and was one of more accountable players on the team. As a coach, Jackson made stops as a coach with the Buffalo Bills, Washington and Detroit Lions. He, then, returned to Nashville as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach in 2016, a title he held for two seasons. From there, he went on to serve as the assistant defensive backs coach for the New York Jets (2018-19) and the secondary coach for the Cincinnati Bengals (2020-21) before landing with the Falcons, a team that was coached by ex-Titans offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.

Linebackers Coach: The Titans added more to the defensive side of the ball with the addition of Frank Bush as the teams linebackers coach. Bush was drafted in the 5th round of the 1985 draft by the Houston Oilers played two seasons with the franchise, his only two seasons in the NFL. Bush began his coaching career in 1993 with the Oilers and spent two seasons there. Bush has held the title linebackers coach eight times, including with the Titans from 2011-2012 and, most recently, with the Falcons since 2021. This is Bush’s third stint at linebackers coach with the franchise.

Running Backs Coach: The Titans added a new running backs coach to the staff by hiring Randy Jordan. The team is retaining Justin Outten (last years running backs coach / run game coordinator) as the tight end’s coach. Jordan spent the previous ten seasons in Washington with the Commanders as the running backs coach, but added senior offensive assistant in 2023.

Quarterbacks Coach: After the Titans parted ways with Charles London (last years QB coach), the team and Brian Callahan has found their new quarterbacks coach in Bo Hardegree. He spent the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders and is a University of Tennessee product at quarterback. Hardegree has sixteen years of coaching experience including the last ten seasons in the NFL. Hardegree joined the Raiders as Quarterbacks coach in 2022 and was promoted to Interim Offensive Coordinator during the 2023 season. Under his time in Las Vegas, fourth-round rookie Aidan O’Connell threw for 1,905 yards, 11 touchdowns and posted the third-best passer rating (83.9) among 2023 rookies. In 2022, Hardegree guided Derek Carr to his fourth career Pro Bowl after completing 305 of 502 passes for 3,522 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Assistant Wide Receivers Coach: The Titans add Payton McCollum as the teams assistant wide receivers coach after spending last season as a Defensive Assistant for the Indianapolis Colts. McCollum brings nine years of coaching experience, including three in the NFL.

Outside Linebackers Coach: The Titans added Ben Bloom as the teams outside linebackers coach replacing Ryan Crow. Bloom spent the last four seasons with the Cleveland Browns helping coach one of the league’s best defenses. Bloom is entering his 15th season as an NFL coach.

Defensive Line Coach: The Titans found their replacement at defensive line coach after the departure of Terrell Williams (Lions defensive line coach / run game coordinator) with the hire of Tracy Rocker. He is a 32-year coaching veteran and spent the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. Rocker first entered the NFL coaching scene as a defensive line coach with the Titans from 2011-13. In 2012, Tennessee produced the 10th-most sacks (39) in the league, while defensive end Derrick Morgan had a breakout year, recording 59 tackles, 23 quarterback hits and 6.5 sacks. Prior to joining Philadelphia’s staff, Rocker spent seven seasons coaching the defensive line in the collegiate ranks, including stints at South Carolina (2020), Tennessee (2017-19) and Georgia (2014-16). During his 24-year collegiate coaching career which also included stops at his alma mater Auburn (2009-10), Mississippi (2008), Arkansas (2003-07), Cincinnati (2002), Troy State (1997-2001) and West Alabama (1994-96), Rocker mentored numerous NFL Draft picks, including six All-Americans and two national award winners.

Assistant Head Coach: Titans head coach Brian Callahan found his assistant head coach in Tom Jones. He joins the Titans after spending 25 years with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. His final two seasons with the Raiders were as Vice President of Football Operations/Assistant to the Head Coach. Prior to his promotion, he was the Director of Team Operations.

Special Teams Coordinator: The Titans, after releasing former Special Teams Coordinator Craig Aukerman and not retaining the interim Tom Quinn, have found their replacement to coach the special teams. The Titans are hiring Colt Anderson as Special Teams Coordinator. Anderson has four years of NFL coaching experience with all four seasons being in Cincinnati with the Bengals as a Special Teams Assistant coach. Head coach Brian Callahan has made it a point this offseason to establish a coaching staff based on experience, relationships, and bringing the same message as a group. Anderson fits the mold due to the connection with him and Callahan’s time in Cincinnati. Anderson entered the league in 2009 as a rookie free agent with the Minnesota Vikins and went on to play six years in the NFL as a safety and a core special teamer. As a coach, he helped kicker Evan McPherson to a PFWA All-Rookie team as he led the NFL in field goals made over 50 yards (9), while also ranked seventh in PAT’s made (46), and eleventh in points scored (130). In 2023, Anderson helped the Bengals special teams unit to a top-10 ranking in several categories. Tenth in punt return avg. (10.2 yards per return), eighth in opponent punt return avg. (7.0 yards per return), second in opponent kickoff return avg. (17.0 yards per return), and fifth in opponent net punting avg. (40.2 yards per punt).

Assistant Offensive Line Coach: The Titans have hired Scott Fuchs to be the Assistant Offensive Line Coach as he will be the right hand man Bill Callahan, Offensive Line Coach. The narrative of experience, relationships and preaching the same message comes up again as Fuchs has 30 years of coaching in the college ranks as an offensive line coach. Fuchs will make his first appearance as an NFL coach, but has done a tremendous job coaching in college with the University of Kansas (2021-23), University of Buffalo (2019-2020), University of Wyoming (2014-18), North Dakota State University (2009-13), and several stops after getting his start coaching in 1994. During his time in Kansas, Fuchs coached seven All-Big 12 selections, and paved the way to the fourth best rushing offense in the Big 12 and led the conference with 31 rushing touchdowns. As a player at North Dakota State University, Fuchs earned first-team All-America honors during his senior season as a guard.

Defensive Assistant: The Titans have hired Steve Donatell as the team’s Defensive Assistant. Donatell spent the previous three seasons with the Miami Dolphins in the same role. He was a part of the Dolphins defensive staff that helped them to finish the season with a takeaway in twelve consecutive games. No other team in the NFL had more than four consecutive games. Donatell began his NFL coaching career in 2022 with the Minnesota Vikings. He got his coaching start in 2018 coaching the outside linebackers at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before heading west to Stanford as a Defensive Quality Control Analyst from 2019-21.

Titans Free Agents and Potential Cap Cuts

The Titans will be faced with several tough decisions during the 2024 offseason, including what to do with pending free agents. The job of retaining some of these players and bringing in more to improve the roster is never easy, but the Titans currently have the second-highest available cap space in the NFL with $68.82 million according to Spotrac. However, the Titans currently have the most dead cap space across the NFL with $31,837,758. Players such as Kevin Byard ($13,359,000), Ryan Tannehill ($9,200,000), and Derrick Henry ($4,735,294) lead the way in terms of dead cap hits for 2024. UPDATE: The NFL salary cap in 2024 rose to $255.4 million. That is an estimated increase of just over $30 million from the 2023 season. The Tennessee Titans are now estimated to have roughly $80.69 million in availalbe cap space (still ranking 2nd highest in the NFL).

The toughest decisions the Titans will face is to decide on whether to bring back running back Derrick Henry and/or defensive lineman Denico Autry. The Titans have all but officially parted ways with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who was with the team since 2019.

Here is a list of the Titans 2024 soon-to-be free agents thanks to Spotrac.

Carthon and the Titans did say they are not closing the door on a possible return to Nashville for Henry this offseason.
