The Tennessee Titans are returning home this weekend to play against the New England Patriots. This will be Mike Vrabel’s first time coaching against the Titans since he was fired in January of 2024. This will also be the Titans’ first game after firing head coach Brian Callahan.
Titans Week Six Recap
This past Sunday, the Titans suffered another loss. The 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders moves their record to 1-5. The Titans’ crucial turnovers and inability to convert on third down led to their downfall in this game. This is a game that the Titans will want to quickly move on from.
Patriots Season Recap
The Patriots are coming into this game on a three-game winning streak, including a big win two weeks ago on Sunday night against the Bills. The Patriots have been led by a great passing offense. New England is currently averaging 8.5 yards per passing attempt, which is third-best in the NFL. The Patriots’ offense is led by second-year quarterback Drake Maye. Maye is currently averaging 253.7 yards per game, which is the seventh-highest in the NFL. The Patriots’ adding wide receiver Stefon Diggs and bringing in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have completely transformed their offense.
New Head Coach
On Monday, the Titans announced that they are parting ways with head coach Brian Callahan. Callahan went 4-19 during his tenure with the Titans. That is a winning percentage of .174, which is the worst all time for an NFL head coach with a minimum of 20 games. The Titans announced that senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy will be taking over as interim head coach. McCoy makes sense as the interim head coach, because he has four years of head coaching experience. McCoy coached the San Diego Chargers from 2013-2016. McCoy had a 27-37 record and made the playoffs one time. On Sunday we will find out how this coaching change affects the Titans’ performance on the field. Sometimes an midseason coaching change can inspire players to step up their game. Titans players also are now aware that they have to put their best performances on tape now, or they will be in danger of being replaced by the new coaching staff that comes in next offseason.
Mike Vrabel Returns
This Sunday Mike Vrabel returns to Nissan Stadium to coach against his former team. Vrabel was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023. The Titans had a record of 56-48 during that time and made the playoffs three times, including a run to the AFC conference championship in 2019. After taking a year off from coaching, Vrabel was hired by the Patriots last offseason. The Patriots are off to a good start this year as they are currently 4-2 and in first place in the AFC East. It should be an interesting matchup this weekend with Vrabel back in Nissan Stadium.
Calvin Ridley Injury
Last Sunday, Titans receiver, Calvin Ridley, left the game in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury. Ridley did not return the rest of the game. The Titans have not given an exact timetable yet, but he is most likely going to miss at least the next game. The Titans will need their other receivers to step up in his place. Last Sunday, Van Jefferson saw the biggest increase in snaps after the Ridley injury. Jefferson along with Elic Ayomanor, Tyler Lockett, and Chimere Dike will have to step up in the place of the injured Ridley.
