The Tennessee Titans will travel to Houston this Sunday with hopes of picking up their first win of the season. The Titans will face off against the Houston Texans, who are also winless so far this year. Last year, the Titans and Texans split their season series, with both teams winning on the road. The Titans’ last regular-season win came against the Texans last year on November 24th, 2024. Hopefully, the Titans can break their losing streak with a win against the Texans this Sunday.
Titans Week Three Recap
The Titans’ game against the Colts last Sunday did not go well. The Colts won definitively with a score of 41-20. The game started poorly for the Titans when Cam Ward threw a pick-six on the opening drive. After that play, Daniel Jones and the Colts took control of the game, and the Titans were never able to keep up.
Texans Season Recap
The Houston Texans have had a disappointing start to the 2025 season. After winning the AFC South and making it to the divisional round last year, the Texans have lost all three games to start the season. Much of the Texans’ problems can be attributed to their offensive struggles. The Texans are currently last in the NFL in total points scored. The offensive line has been a big issue for the Texans after they traded away Laremy Tunsil and cut Shaq Mason last offseason. So far, the Texans have given up 8 sacks, which is tied for the 8th most in the league. The Texans have faced three good teams so far and have kept every game close, which is a promising sign, but they cannot be satisfied with starting 0-3.
New Play Caller
In a press conference on Tuesday, Brian Callahan announced that he is stepping down as the play caller on offense. Starting this Sunday, Quarterbacks coach, Bo Hardegree, will be taking over playcalling duties. At the press conference on Tuesday, Callahan said, “Bo is going to step in as the play caller on Sunday and allow me to do a little more with our team and with all three phases. Pay more time and attention to those things and less in the weeds of getting ready to game plan.” Hardegree has spent time as an interim play caller before, which makes him an obvious choice for this role. In 2023, Bo Hardegree stepped in as the interim offensive coordinator for the Raiders for the final nine games of the season. During this time, the Raiders went 5-4 and improved in every offensive statistical category. This was all while being led by fourth-round rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell. On Sunday, we will find out how this decision affects the offense and the entire team.
Titans Defensive Line vs Texans Offensive Line
The key for the Titans in this game will be disrupting the Texans’ offensive line. That is what the Texans’ last three opponents have exposed, so the Titans will need to replicate that if they want to win on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Titans, they have not been able to get pressure in any other game this year. The Titans have recorded only two sacks this year, which is the second-fewest, behind the Panthers. Tennessee has to be able to win in the trenches if they want to get their first win of the season.
Eliminating Mistakes
One of the issues in the Titans’ three losses this year has been committing too many penalties. So far this year, the Titans have committed 31 penalties, which is tied for the most in the NFL. These penalties have come at critical times and cost the teams points. On top of the penalties, the Titans have struggled with other mistakes like turnovers and dropping passes. Cam Ward has at times made some rookie mistakes, which is to be expected; however, he needs some help from his receivers. Calvin Ridley is currently credited with four drops this season, which is tied for the most in the NFL. The Titans need to start playing mistake-free football to turn the season around.
Roster Changes
On Tuesday, the Titans traded away Jarvis Brownlee Jr to the New York Jets. In the deal, the Titans will get a sixth-round pick in 2026 in exchange for Brownlee and a 2026 seventh-round pick. Brownlee was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 draft. Since then, he played in 19 games for the Titans. The reason for the trade is still not clear to the public, but the Titans will need Jalyn Armour-Davis, among others, to step up in place of Brownlee this weekend.
The Texans also made a big change to their secondary this week. On Tuesday, the team announced that they had cut their starting safety, CJ Gardner-Johnson. The seven-year veteran had played in all three games of the season for the Texans; however, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans decided that it was time for the team to move on from him. The Texans will be relying on M.J. Stewart and Calen Bullock to fill Gardner-Johnson’s role.
