The Tennessee Titans play their last game of the regular season this weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars are looking to clinch the AFC South with a win this weekend. The Titans will try to play spoiler against one of their biggest rivals in the AFC South.
Titans Week Seventeen Recap
Last weekend, the Titans lost 34-26 to the New Orleans Saints. The Titans looked good, holding a 20-10 lead at halftime, but fell apart in the fourth quarter. The Titans struggled to stop Tyler Shough, who had 333 passing yards, and went 22 for 27 with two touchdowns. The Titans had the opportunity to tie the game in the fourth quarter. On a fourth and ten, it looked like Cam Ward had made a miraculous diving throw to keep the Titans alive, but unfortunately, the play was called back due to Ward’s knee being on the ground before he made the throw. Despite the loss, Ward made several highlight plays that should get Titans fans excited about their future with Ward under center.
Jacksonville Jaguars Season Recap
The Jaguars have had a very good season in their first year being coached by Liam Coen. The Jaguars are currently 12-4 and sit alone on top of the AFC South. With a win over the Titans, the Jaguars would clinch the AFC South and a home playoff game. If the Jaguars lose and the Texans win, the Texans would win the division and the Jaguars would fall into the wild card. The Jaguars also still have a chance at claiming the number one seed in the AFC. In order for that to happen, the Jaguars need to win, and the Broncos and Patriots both have to lose. The Jaguars will want to try to win this game to secure a home playoff game, or if everything goes well, and they can grab the number one seed, they can get a bye in the playoffs. Either way, there’s a lot on the line for the Jaguars in this game, so the Titans should expect their best performance.
Cam Ward Progression
In the game this past weekend, Cam Ward showed flashes of greatness. Ward showed the ability to move out of the pocket and make throws on the run against the Saints. These types of plays should get fans of the Titans excited about Ward’s potential. With nothing at stake left in the season, Ward’s progression should be the main focus of the team. They just spent a number one pick on him, and he has shown that if he is surrounded by the right pieces, he can be a franchise quarterback in this league. Ward is the main player to watch in the Titans’ last game this weekend.
Lack of Cornerbacks
In last week’s game against the Saints, Titans cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis tore his Achilles. With the Titans already struggling at the cornerback position, this loss hurts. Along with Armour-Davis, Marcus Harris, L’Jarius Sneed, and Kevin Winston Jr are all on the IR for the Titans. The only healthy cornerbacks listed on the Titans roster right now are Darrell Baker Jr, Micah Robinson, and Kaiir Elam. The Titans may look to bring in another cornerback from free agency or the practice squad before the game on Sunday. With all the injuries to this already weak unit, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars will most definitely look to expose the Titans’ secondary on Sunday.
Head Coaching Search
With the season close to ending, many Titans fans have already started to focus on the head coaching search. CBS Sports Insider, Jonathan Jones, listed five candidates linked to the Titans’ head coaching vacancy: Matt Nagy, Mike McCarthy, Jeff Hafley, Chris Shula, and Jesse Minter. When the season ends and several other teams fire their head coach, more candidates may emerge for the Titans. With how quickly the Brian Callahan era ended and how much success Mike Vrabel has had this season in New England, Titans’ ownership is facing a lot of pressure to get this next hire right. The next coach will also have a big impact on the development of Cam Ward, so this will be a big decision for the Titans’ ownership.
