This Sunday, the Tennessee Titans travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns. The game will be a noon kickoff as the 1-11 Titans take on the 3-9 Browns. Any Titans fans planning on traveling to the game will need to bring their winter jackets. The forecast is currently projecting a high of 31 degrees with a chance of snow in the morning.
Titans Week Thirteen Recap
Last Sunday was a disappointing loss for the Titans against the Jaguars. On their opening drive, they marched down the field and kicked a field goal, but after that drive, they weren’t able to do anything offensively all game. The final score ended up being 25-3. The Titans are still struggling with the same issues that have been bothering them the last couple of weeks; they aren’t able to run the ball, and they aren’t able to defend the pass.
Cleveland Browns Season Recap
The Cleveland Browns were a team with very low expectations coming into the year, and so far, they haven’t done anything to surprise people outside of a week 3 upset over the Packers. The Browns have lost four out of their last five games, and are starting rookie quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. Sanders entered the year as the third-string quarterback, but got promoted to the starter after Joe Flacco got traded and Dillon Gabriel went down with an injury. Sanders has put up solid numbers in his last two starts. We will see what he does Sunday against a struggling Titans secondary in a cold weather environment.
Browns Defense vs Titans Run Offense
The Titans have still not been able to establish the run all season, which is very uncharacteristic for a Tennessee Titans team. Last week, the Titans were able to establish the run on their first drive of the game, but after that, they struggled to move the ball on the ground. The Titans finished the game with only 67 rushing yards. Currently, the Titans are averaging 76.7 rushing yards per game, which is second-lowest in the league.
The Titans may have more trouble running the ball this weekend against a Browns defense that is one of the best in the league. The Browns are giving up 3.7 yards per run, which is the lowest in the league. To go along with that, Myles Garrett is leading the NFL in sacks by a large margin. Garrett has 19 sacks so far this season. The NFL record for sacks in a season is 22.5 sacks, so Garrett is only 3.5 sacks away. I would expect Garrett to play aggressively this week, knowing that he is so close to NFL history.
Browns Rookies
One of the highlights for the Browns this season has been the production from their rookies. With their first two picks, they took defensive lineman Mason Graham and linebacker Carson Schwesinger. Schwesinger is having an amazing season and is currently the favorite to win defensive rookie of the year. Graham is not too far behind him with the ninth-best odds to win the award. With the Browns’ last five picks of the draft, they took all offensive players. These players include Quinshon Judkins, Harold Fannin Jr., Dillon Gabriel, Dylan Sampson, and Shedeur Sanders.
Judkins is currently the team’s leading rusher, Fannin is the team’s leading receiver, and Gabriel is the team’s leading passer. No team in NFL history has ever had its leading passer, rusher, and receiver all be rookies. On both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, look for the Browns’ rookies to be making big plays in the game on Sunday.
Battle for Draft Position
With the Titans officially eliminated from playoff contention, and the Browns with a less than one percent chance to make the playoffs, it is naturally time for fans to start paying attention to draft position. If the season ended today, the Titans would have the number one pick in the draft. The Giants, Saints, and Raiders are all one game behind the Titans. After those teams, there are four teams with only three wins, including the Browns. With all these teams close to each other in the standings, things could shake up over the next couple of weeks. One other thing to note is that the tiebreakers in the NFL draft are determined by strength of schedule. Right now, the Titans have the highest strength of schedule in the league, so they would lose any tiebreaker that they are put in. To keep the number one pick, the Titans would likely have to lose out.
On one hand, you want the team to win a game or two to build up the confidence of Cam and some of the other young players, but on the other hand, the Titans can gain significant draft capital by earning the number one pick and then trading back in the draft with a quarterback-needy team. Teams like the Rams and Jets will both be in the market for a rookie quarterback and will have multiple first-round picks to throw at the Titans in a potential trade. This will be an interesting storyline to follow as the rest of the season unfolds.
