Coming out of the bye week, the Tennessee Titans are gearing up for their home game on Sunday against the Houston Texans. This will be the Titans’ first game of a three-week home stretch. The Texans are coming off a 36-29 comeback win against the Jaguars.
Titans Week Nine Recap
Before the bye week, the Titans’ last game was week 9 against the Chargers. In that game, the Titans held a 14-7 lead going into the second quarter after a pick-6 and punt return touchdown in the first quarter. Despite the touchdowns from defense and special teams, the offense wasn’t able to keep up. The offense only moved the ball 206 yards and didn’t score a touchdown. The key moment of the game was when the Titans were stuffed after multiple attempts to get into the end zone from the one-yard line. That score would have given the Titans the lead. Instead, the Chargers got the ball on the one-yard line and went on a 99-yard drive to score a touchdown.
Texans Season Recap
The Texans currently have a 4-5 record after their divisional win over the Jaguars. Last week, the Texans’ starting quarterback, CJ Stroud, was not able to play due to a concussion that he suffered in week 9 against the Colts. Texans’ backup, Davis Mills, came in and threw for 292 yards to lead the Texans to a victory. Stroud has been ruled out again for this weekend’s game.
The Titans and Texans have already played once this year. In week four, the Texans beat the Titans 26-0. The Titans struggled to move the ball in that game, only gaining 175 yards. We’ll see if the Titans can put up a better performance this week.
Danielle Hunter vs Titans’ Offensive Line
Houston Texans edge rusher Danielle Hunter is coming into this game after a dominant performance against the Jaguars in week 10. Hunter recorded seven tackles, four tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in Houston’s win over Jacksonville. These stats earned Danielle Hunter the Week 10 AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Hunter currently has 7.5 sacks this season, which is the seventh most in the NFL.
On the opposite side of Hunter, the Texans have former number three overall pick, Will Anderson Jr, who currently has 7 sacks this year. This duo would be difficult for any team to stop, but the Titans, in particular, may have a hard time guarding them. Cam Ward has been sacked 38 times this year, which is more than any other quarterback. We’ll see this Sunday how these dominant edge rushers disrupt the Titans’ offense.
Jeffery Simmons Return
The Titans have been without their star player, Jeffery Simmons, in their last two games. His official status for Sunday has not been announced yet; however, on Monday, Simmons tweeted out, “I’m ready to get back to it! That was just the warm-up! I haven’t played in three weeks.” Simmons would be a big help for the Titans’ defense on Sunday if he is able to suit up. Last game against the Texans was Simmons’ best game all season. Simmons had four tackles for loss to go along with one of the quickest sacks that you’ve ever seen. If he can play on Sunday, he could have a huge impact on the game.
Race For Number One Pick
While the Titans were on bye last week, the Jets and Saints both won their games to get their second wins of the season. Currently, the Titans are the only team in the NFL with only one win, so if the season ended today, the Titans would get the first overall pick. There are still plenty of games left, so things could shake up. Currently, the Saints, Giants, Jets, Browns, and Raiders sit right behind the Titans with two wins each. The Titans have games against the Browns and the Saints later in the season, which will largely impact where they end up in the draft order.
If the Titans were to get the first overall pick, their best decision would probably be to trade back with a team searching for a quarterback. Many teams may be targeting quarterbacks Fernando Mendoza or Ty Simpson in the draft, so the Titans could capitalize by trading back and acquiring extra draft capital. With the number of holes on the current Titans’ roster, a trade back could be their best move. Still have a lot of games left, but this is something to pay attention to as the Titans finish their season.
