The Tennessee Titans travel to Indianapolis this weekend to play the Colts. This will be the Colts’ and Titans’ second matchup of the year. Currently, the Colts are on a five-game winning streak against the Titans. The Titans have not beaten the Colts since October 23rd, 2022.
Titans Week Seven Recap
Last Sunday, the Tennessee Titans lost to the New England Patriots by a score of 31-13. The Titans kept the game competitive in the first half, but then fell apart in the second half. Towards the end of the second quarter, the Titans were up 13-10, but the Patriots drove down the field and scored a touchdown, then scored a touchdown to open the second half, and then Cam Ward had a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. After that sequence, the Titans were not able to recover. Drake Maye was extremely efficient, passing the ball against the Titans, completing 21 out of his 23 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Colts Season Recap
The Indianapolis Colts appear to be one of the best teams in the NFL. They are 6-1 and have scored more points than any other team in the NFL. Just five weeks ago, they played against the Titans, and they ended up winning that game 41-20. In that game, the Titans looked outmatched in every area of the field. Slowing down the Colts’ offense is not going to be easy for the Titans on Sunday.
Colts Offense
In his third year coaching the Colts, Shane Steichen has turned this Colts offense into one of the best units in the NFL. Daniel Jones is having a career year, and Steichen is getting the most out of his talented playmakers, Jonathan Taylor and Tyler Warren. The Colts are currently first in points scored, second in total yards, first in yards per play, first in first downs, and have given up the least amount of sacks in the NFL. These impressive numbers demonstrate the Colts’ dominance on offense this year.
Titans Passing Attack
One positive that you can take out of Sunday’s game is that the passing offense looked better. Mike McCoy told the press before Sunday’s game that he wanted to simplify the Titans’ offense to make things easier for Cam Ward. At the beginning of the game, the Titans came out firing, and the passing offense looked much better. Ward threw for 255 yards and had a 74 percent completion percentage. On top of that, Ward posted a season-high 92.2 passer rating. The downside is that the Titans weren’t able to get anything going running the ball. The Titans only had 39 rushing yards all game. Hopefully, the Titans can get the ground game going next game to open up even more opportunities for Ward to throw the ball downfield.
Key Injuries
A big reason why the Titans struggled in the second half on Sunday is that they were missing their star defensive player, Jeffery Simmons. Simmons left late in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return to the game. Simmons is currently listed as “week-to-week,” so it appears that he will miss significant time. This is a big blow for the Titans because Simmons is by far their best player, and without him, the defense is in trouble. Along with Simmons being injured, L’jarius Sneed injured his quadricep last game and has been put onto IR. On the offensive side of the ball, Calvin Ridley is still dealing with the hamstring injury that he suffered in week 6. We will not know the official game status of these players until later in the week, but it seems unlikely that any of these key players will suit up.
These injuries will force younger players on the Titans’ roster to step into a bigger role in the upcoming weeks. At this point in the season, that is what the Titans need to be focusing on anyway. Providing valuable experience to allow their younger players to develop.
