(FAIRFIELD, Conn.) -- Sacred Heart University introduced former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine as their new athletic director on Tuesday.

The 62-year-old Valentine will be in charge of the school's 31 athletic programs that compete in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers, a Division I university, have 14 teams for men and 17 for women. The school’s baseball team is the two-time defending conference champion.

Valentine is taking over for longtime athletic director Don Cook, who announced his retirement in November.
